Father Abraham worships his God
Hebrews
The word “Hebrew” comes from the Aramaic word 'ebhrai, meaning “an Israelite,” or literally, “one from the other side.” It is thought to be related to the Hebrew name Eber (Gen. 10:21; Lk 3:35) who was Abraham's father, five generations removed. Eventually, it came to refer to the group of people who migrated to Canaan with Abraham. Thus, “Hebrew” is the name others in Canaan would use to refer to people in Abraham's family (Gen. 14:13). Later it came to refer to Jacob's family, the Israelites.
Ray Stedman wrote that the theme of the book of Hebrews is, " How to make Christians believe, how to make Christians act like Christians." But it is more than that. To convince Christians believe and act like Christians, the author of Hebrews presents to us Jesus Christ, "the author and perfecter of our faith," as the supreme priest and all sufficient sacrifice, "who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Heb. 12:2)
In this Bible study we will follow through the book of Hebrews verse-by-verse with a focus on Christ as He is presented to His people as the Son declared and foretold in Scripture, the final High Priest anointed by God the Father, and the final, perfect Sacrifice Who fulfills the Law and ends the need for sacrifice. Then we will listen to the author of Hebrews describe the only appropriate response for anyone who hears and believes these truths.
